My experience in people management & leadership

I have had a mix of lateral and direct management experiences. In my experience as a chief of staff to a senior organizational leader, I was responsible for the coordination of people, projects and ideas with my peers. I think that this early experience in consensus and relationally driven influence has been integral in shaping my orientations to management and leadership.  In general, I've been motivated by (and learned from great managers) Daniel Pink's "autonomy, mastery, purpose" approach to motivation. Early in my career, I had the opportunity to attend a training with The Boda Group in Boston.

In addition to lateral/direct people management, I'm also learning in my newer experiences of decision-making in groups of "senior organizational leaders." I have been on one senior management team in my former capacity as head of Knowledge Development, and currently serve on a leadership team charged with stewarding the direction of 150+ member team.

AN APPROACH TO LATERAL PROJECT AND PEOPLE MANAGEMENT: AN EMAIL EXAMPLE

  • Below is one work sample illustrating lateral project management from my role as Chief of Staff to the SVP, Knowledge Development.
  • I wrote this email as part of my work to align and bring clarity to multiple on-going projects, with various drivers of work streams. I sent the team weekly Friday evening "wrap up" communications, here is one example of how I approach this effort.
